Can You Send a Package with Stamps?

You may be wondering if you can use stamps to mail a package now that you know how much postage costs for each of USPS’ package services.

It’s possible to mail a package using stamps, but it’s usually a lot of work that doesn’t pay off.

Packages that weigh more than 13 ounces must be taken to the post office, where the clerk can verify their contents, in accordance with USPS rules and regulations.

In other words, using stamps to pay for your package won’t save you any time or effort because you’ll still have to drop it off in person.

It’s also possible that you’ll underestimate or overestimate the number of stamps you need to include. Over or under-paying for postage could result.

A lack of stamps may result in your package being returned to you because of insufficient postage. You’re wasting money if you include too many stamps.

We recommend using a home postage scale and the USPS’ price calculator to determine your postage amount before printing a shipping label to avoid any shipping problems..

Taking your package to the post office to have the postage printed is an option if you don’t have access to a scale at your residence.

Why Do I Need USPS Priority Mail Postage?

With a few simple steps, you can still use postal stamps to pay for the postage on your USPS package.

Stamps for Priority Mail Express, for example, are available from the US Postal Service. The Priority Mail Express shipping fee of $26.95 is included in the stamp’s retail price.

If you’re using Priority Mail Express, you’ll only need one of these stamps.

Priority Mail stamps are available from USPS for $7.95 or $8.95. Depending on the type of box or envelope you use, this may be sufficient to cover the cost of postage.

Finally, USPS sells stamps with predetermined dollar values (e.g. $2, $5, and $10) that can be used with any shipping service.

Additional stamp options are available, including standard Forever Stamps, which can be used for postage.

In this section, we go into greater detail about how many Forever Stamps you’ll need for different package weights.

How Many Stamps Are Necessary for a 1 Pound Package?

Priority Mail is the most common method for shipping packages weighing less than 1 pound.

Flat-rate envelopes cost $8.95 to ship, while small flat-rate boxes cost $9.45 to ship.

To ship a small box via Priority Mail, you’d need 17 Forever Stamps at the current Forever Stamp price of $0.58. That’s 16 Forever Stamps per envelope and 16 for small boxes.

If you use Forever Stamps to pay for postage, you’ll be overpaying in both cases.

It costs $8.95 to mail an envelope, but you’ll pay $9.28 (or $0.33 more than you should) for postage.

It costs $9.45 to mail a small flat rate box; however, you’ll pay $9.86 for it (an extra $0.41).

The US Postal Service’s Media Mail Service is an option if your package contains books, music, or educational charts.

Starting at $3.19, one-pound packages can be sent via Media Mail. This means that six Forever Stamps would be required for postage.

You’ll pay more than you should, just like with Express Mail. It costs $3.19 for postage, but you’ll pay $3.48 (which is an additional $0.29).

How Many Stamps Do I Need for a 2-Pound Package?

Once again, we’ll compare Priority Mail and Media Mail in order to figure out how many stamps you’ll need for a 2-pound package.

A 2-pound Priority Mail package will use the same number of stamps as a 1-pound Priority Mail package, provided that you’re using Flat Rate shipping products.

For a small Flat Rate envelope, you’ll need 16 Forever Stamps, and 17 Forever Stamps for a small Flat Rate box.

If you’re shipping a 2-pound package via Media Mail, you can expect to pay $3.82.

Seven Forever Stamps would be required to pay for postage. You’ll be overcharged once more. You’ll pay an extra $0.24 if you buy seven Forever Stamps, which costs $4.06.

Bottom Line

Despite the fact that stamps can be used to pay for package shipping, we generally advise against it. In comparison to Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail stamps, Forever Stamps leave too much room for human error.
