Even if you’re moving only a few doors down, there are a slew of duties you’ll need to complete. Changes to one’s mailing address with the United States Postal Service are essential.

It’s possible that some of your mail will never reach your new mailbox if you go through the address change process.

In other words, does a change of address with the US Postal Service include IRS and other government mail? Your search has ended.

Will USPS Forward IRS & Other Government Mail In 2022?

Federal government mail, including IRS, DMV, Social Security and government cheques, cannot be forwarded by the US Postal Service. While it is possible to find a post office that does this, it is rare. Manually registering a change of address with government authorities is the best option following a relocation.

USPS doesn’t send government mail, and we’ll explain why in the following paragraphs!

Why Doesn’t USPS Forward IRS & Other Government Mail?

As far as I know, the US Postal Service is not permitted to transmit government-issued mail.
If I had to guess, I’d say it’s because government correspondence, like that from the IRS, may be quite sensitive.

My Social Security card was stolen. You may apply for a new one online if you need to. However, the Social Security Administration may only send you a physical card via mail. It’s like if you’re planning to move into a new property and have already registered your new address.

Let’s say the card was sent to your new home, and someone was going door-to-door looking for residences with For Sale/Sold signs out front to see if the mail had been delivered. It’s possible that they may get their hands on your mail and get your whole social security number.

When you have that much authority, it wouldn’t take them long to create havoc on your money. Even if you’re relocating from a thousand miles away, you’ll still have to deal with shady characters in your area.

It’s not a good idea to leave such sensitive material in a mailbox for a week. Perhaps much more so if your mailbox is located right next to the road? We can be confident that the federal government does not. Avoiding mistakes is preferable than correcting them in government entities, which are notoriously reluctant to change.

You may lose hundreds or thousands of dollars if your government mail was intercepted by someone who was not authorized to receive it.

To be safe, the federal government does not allow the US Postal Service to forward mail for those who have just relocated. Federal mail may be forwarded to a new address notwithstanding the existence of a statute that mandates that it cannot.

How Do You Receive IRS & Government Mail From USPS After A Move?

A common complaint among those who have just relocated is that they have the uneasy sensation that something isn’t getting through to them in their new location. Anxiety arises when it comes from the federal government or any of its agencies like the IRS.

As a result, it is imperative that you notify the postal service of your change address as soon as possible. Yes, you must directly notify them; the USPS address change process is insufficient.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a frequent example of a government agency. Besides, we see them at least once a year, and during the COVID-19 outbreak, it was more like a few times each year.

To make sure you get IRS correspondence at your new address, follow these simple steps. You can go to an IRS office if there is one nearby. Call them at 1-800-829-1040 if you prefer (7 a.m. until 7 p.m.). In the event that you don’t have the time or energy to make an in-person visit or phone conversation, you can send this Change of Address form instead.

Use your new address when you submit your taxes to change your address with the IRS during tax season (January through mid-April). The USPS offers a premium forwarding service if you don’t want to wait for a free or long-term solution.

A one-time enrollment fee of $20.90, followed by a weekly subscription fee of $22.75 is required. Keep in mind that this is only a supplemental means of transport.

What Mail Doesn’t USPS Forward?

The following is a list of mail types that the United States Postal Service does not forward:

  • Government checks – Stimulus, tax refunds, etc.
  • Anything from Social Security
  • Bulk mail/nonprofit mail
  • Lightweight packages
  • Bound, printed matter

People have reported getting stimulus payments at new addresses after USPS sent the first two items on the list.

In other words, this is an anomaly, not the rule! This type of article should be treated as if it would never be transmitted. Get in touch with government authorities as soon as possible after relocating.

Does USPS Forward Government Refund Checks?

When it comes to government-issued refund cheques, the United States Postal Service (USPS) does not forward them.

Nevertheless, anecdotal evidence suggests that the post office did transmit the cheques.
While it may appear as though they’re breaking the law, they’ve just broken the speed limit.
Changing your address with the IRS is the best approach to ensure that your checks arrive at your new location.

In the section above, you’ll find all the options you need. Consider switching to direct deposit as an additional payment option. If you don’t update your bank account, the money will be transferred immediately to your account, and no address changes are required.

Does USPS Forward DMV Mail?

Department of Motor Vehicles mail cannot be forwarded by the United States Postal Service.
You should not open any mail from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It’s crucial to tell the DMV as soon as possible of any address changes so that they don’t disrupt your mail delivery.

One source says that you must notify the DMV within 10 days of moving to a new location. Getting your driver’s license renewed is as simple as filling out a form on the DMV website in your state.

As long as you have your old and new addresses, you’ll be able to complete the process with ease. Your state’s DMV may charge you a fee for changing your address. While in PA it costs $30.50, it just costs $11.00 in Minnesota (for example).

Bottom Line

Due to the sensitive and personal nature of government agency correspondence, the United States Postal Service does not often forward it.

Instead, it is the responsibility of the person who has recently relocated to promptly notify these organizations of their new location.
