Of the 129.2 billion pieces of mail handled by the United States Postal Service last year, 52.6 billion of those pieces were First Class mail.

It’s a miracle that the organization is able to run so smoothly every single day, considering the enormous number of people involved. Still, many people prefer the security of being able to track their mail.

Inquiring minds want to know: Is tracking available for USPS First Class? To help you out, here are the facts.

In 2022, will USPS First Class Tracking be available?

For First Class Package Retail and Commercial packages, tracking options are included at no additional charge by the United States Postal Service. However, tracking is not available for First Class mail postcards, letters, and flats. Customers can also purchase additional services that provide some tracking information.

Keep reading to find out what First Class mail is automatically tracked, how much tracking costs, and what kinds of add-on services are available for First Class mail!

Is it possible to track a package sent via USPS First Class Mail?

As long as the package being shipped qualifies as a First Class Package, USPS First Class mail can be tracked.

Letters, flats (large envelopes), and packages make up the bulk of First Class mail, which is commonly referred to as “regular” (or parcels).

Unfortunately, only packages shipped First Class include free, built-in tracking.

It is possible to track letters and flats to some extent, but not to the same extent as actual tracking on a package, and the service is an extra cost (see more below).

Adding Tracking to First Class costs how much?

There is no cost to track a package sent First Class.

To be more precise, the cost is already factored into the shipping price.

Bring your package to the post office and tell them you want to ship it First Class. It’s as simple as that. You’ll pay by the ounce, and they’ll weigh it.

In most cases, prices begin at $4 for a pound or less of weight and rise to a maximum of 13 pounds.

(Here’s a handy chart of shipping costs.) First-Class Package Service – Retail, Retail Parcels is located at the bottom of the page.)

If you’re mailing a large envelope and it exceeds the weight limit, you’ll have to upgrade to parcel shipping, according to the USPS website.

Even though it’s more expensive, you’ll be able to track your package for free.

Is It Possible To Track First Class Mail?

You can either bring your First Class package into the post office or print a shipping label at home to add tracking to your package.

You can print the label at home, but there are only a few sites that have partnered with the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Postal Service

Go to the post office’s front desk and say that you’d like to send the box via First Class service.

(If not, they’ll likely provide you with a list of shipping options and their associated costs.)

Your package will then be weighed by a postal worker. Be aware that items between one and four grams cost $4, with the price going up from there.

Your package will be moved to a different USPS mailing service, such as Priority or Priority Express, if it weighs more than 13 ounces.

(Although these options are more expensive, they include tracking and delivery guarantees.)

Afterward, you’ll receive a receipt and a label from the postal worker.

You’ll find your package’s tracking number on the receipt. A tracking number can be given to your recipient so that they can keep an eye on it as well.

Using an approved vendor, such as eBay or PayPal, or an online mailing service like SendPro, will allow you to print a First Class parcel label at home.

First Class shipping labels can be created and printed right on eBay or PayPal, but only if you’ve been approved to do so by the site.

After you’ve paid and completed the transaction, you’ll receive an online receipt.

With your online receipt for First Class parcels, you will likely receive a tracking number in the confirmation email for your transaction.

That’s what you’ll use to track the package, and what you can give your recipient so that they, too, can keep track of the package’s journey.

You may have purchased something online and tracked it using First Class tracking without even realizing it.

Is There A Way To Track A First Class Mail?

First Class letters cannot be tracked the same way packages can, but USPS offers add-on services that give the sender assurance that an item has been received..

There is no guarantee that an item will arrive on time, but you can be more confident that it did – sometimes even to the recipient’s door.

Postal Service Receipt Verification

Certified mail is the first option.

A special green form is attached to the envelope for Certified Mail. At the time of writing, it’s $3.75.

The recipient signs the form, and the form is returned to the sender as proof that the mailpiece has been received with Certified Mail.

For legal purposes, it provides proof of when the item was sent and when it was received.

Confirmation of Signature

In addition to tracking First Class mail or flat envelopes, Signature Confirmation is a tracking-like service.

Online or in a post office, this service provides an additional layer of security by verifying that the recipient actually received the package.

To prove that they are the intended recipient, they must present a valid ID.

It’s possible to receive a copy of the delivery record via email, fax, or mail from the USPS.

On the internet, this item is available for $2.90 rather than $3.45 at a post office.

Preparation for Delivery

As a result of this, the recipient does not benefit from these additional features.

To help your recipient sign up for Informed Delivery, all you have to do is tell them to do so. Signing up for this free USPS service gives you access to the day’s incoming mail.

Alternatively, you can sign up for email notifications and receive them each day.

If you want to know what’s going to happen in the future, this is a good place to start.

It’s also worth looking into whether or not the United States Postal Service (USPS) uses Apple Pay, if USPS sends text messages, and whether or not it delivers to the door.

Bottom Line

Only small packages weighing up to 13 ounces can be tracked by USPS First Class mail.

Tracking is not available for letters or flat envelopes (unless the shipping is upgraded, for a fee, to Priority or Priority Express).

There are a number of add-on services provided by the USPS that allow senders to rest assured that their package has reached its destination.
