Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards are often used by people across the United States to pay for groceries and other essentials at national retail chains.

Since Target is a major food store in the United States and accepts a wide range of payment options to make life easier for its customers, you might question if Target accepts EBT as a payment method. The following is the information I’ve uncovered!

In 2022, will Target accept EBT?

As of 2022, EBT cards will be accepted at Target stores not online. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, cereal, whole wheat bread and grains, canned salmon, and milk may all be purchased at Target with EBT. Customers can use their EBT cards to pay for these items.

Please continue reading if you’d like to learn more about the things you may purchase with EBT and what items are restricted for EBT users at Target.

How does Target handle EBT?

Over 1,900 Target locations around the country accept SNAP and WIC EBT benefits for groceries and other qualified items.

Another payment method is required for any additional goods in your order that aren’t covered by your EBT balance.

To help you find the things you can buy with your EBT card, most Target stores utilize WIC labels to differentiate products. EBT goods are subject to Target’s regular 90-day return policy unless otherwise noted.

Refunds in cash for EBT purchases are illegal under federal law; thus, you will either receive shop credit or an equivalent item in return for presenting your EBT card as proof of purchase.

How can I use EBT at Target?

Sort your EBT-eligible items from normal ones when you get to an operating register and then load the check-out with regular items.

In order to pay, you may either swipe your card or insert it and enter your PIN at the cash register. The clerk will then process the EBT-eligible items first.

Because the computer automatically applies the EBT savings as you scan each item at self-checkout, there is no need to separate the items. Either way, be sure to check scanned products and only use the EBT to buy allowed items.

Where Does Target take EBT?

As the most widely used type of EBT, Target accepts SNAP EBT cards at all of its 1,900+ locations.

While metropolitan sites are more likely to accept WIC payments, most Target Superstores are more likely to accept them since they provide a greater selection of food.

Consult with your local store to see if they take EBT cards, or search for other retailers online using the store finder.

Can I use EBT on Target.com?

Target.com does not accept EBT cards, such as SNAP and WIC, to pay for any of its products. In addition, EBT cannot be used for supermarket delivery or curbside pickup.

What items can I purchase at Target with my EBT card?

EBT cards often cover the cost of basic items that are nutritionally valuable, and most clients adhere to a nutrition plan developed by their adviser.

List of EBT food items offered at Target, with their nutritional value:

  • Breakfast cereal
  • Meats and poultry
  • Milk
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Pasta, rice, and tortillas
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Canned legumes and fish
  • Whole wheat bread and other whole grains
  • Juice (shelf-stable, non-carbonated)
  • Tofu and soy products
  • Peanut butter

Additionally, WIC participants get infant-specific nutrition items such as formula, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and meat.

Additional iron supplements may be given if you are nursing. Make sure you have enough money on your EBT card, as you can only get the agreed-upon amount of money.

What Target merchandise cannot be purchased with EBT?

Benefit recipients of the SNAP and WIC programs are unable to purchase non-food items including cleaning supplies, paper goods, diapers, and other home essentials, as well as prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals.

As a general rule, caffeine-containing beverages such as Red Bull and Monster Energy are excluded from the list.

EBT recipients are also forbidden from purchasing tobacco goods, cigarettes, and alcohol (including wine, beer, and liquors).

Do Target Cashiers Know If I Am On Welfare If I Use My EBT Card?

Since the card type appears on their register, Target cashiers will know whether you’re using an EBT card and if you’re on welfare.

EBT-labeled items may also assist you and the cashier distinguish products, so the cashier may also be aware of your poverty status from that information.

As a result of this inclusive approach, Target strives to serve consumers of all backgrounds.

Can I use my EBT card at the Target Mini-Stores?

A Starbucks, a CVS health center, an optician’s office, and an Apple kiosk are just a few of the conveniences available at Target.

Optometric support, medications, and gadgets are all prohibited from being paid for with EBT cards. However, some SNAP benefits include access to Starbucks mini-stores at Target.

What Is the EBT?

For individuals in need, and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is a plastic card with a strip and PIN feature that acts as a payment mechanism.

Cardholders are given a predetermined amount of money to spend at participating establishments. All purchases must be authorized by your EBT program before you may use it.

Every state in the United States offers EBT as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.
