Does Dollar General Take WIC

By David Krug 3 minute read

Women, infants, and children across the United States benefit greatly from WIC benefits, which are accepted in most major retail stores.

You may wonder if Dollar General accepts WIC benefits because it is a popular store for low-income families. This is what I’ve discovered!

In 2022, does Dollar General accept WIC?

As of 2022, only a very small percentage of Dollar General locations in the United States will accept the WIC program, as they are not generally considered to be WIC-approved grocery stores as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture. The USDA is also the governing agency that defines what is and is not SNAP eligible.

WIC-eligible food items can be purchased at these locations using the WIC Electronic Card, paper checks, or vouchers. Alternatively, you can use WIC at any of the following retailers: Walmart, Walgreens, or Target.

Which Dollar General stores accept WIC benefits?

However, not all Dollar General locations are authorized to accept WIC benefits as an alternative payment method, even though the Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a federal one and thus runs in all 50 states.

For instance, Dollar General locations 0001 in Ada, Oklahoma and 16483 in Myrtle Creek, Oregon both accept WIC as a form of payment.

However, their approval as a WIC store is subject to revocation at any time. Dollar General locations that accept WIC can be found using this convenient online tool.

To find a Dollar General that accepts WIC benefits, you can also use Dollar General’s store locator to contact a nearby store and ask the staff.

What WIC-eligible products are available at Dollar General?

WIC-eligible foods can be purchased at any WIC-approved Dollar General store (or elsewhere):

  • Cereals for breakfast
  • Yogurt, milk, and cheese

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is recommended.

  • Canned fish
  • Bread made with whole grains
  • Eggs
  • Juice
  • Mature legumes

There is, however, no requirement for any state participating in the WIC program to offer every item on the list of eligible products.

Contact your state agency to find out more about what foods are covered by WIC in Dollar General or other stores in your state.

How do you pay for WIC-eligible items at Dollar General?

You’ll need an electronic WIC benefit card, paper checks, or vouchers to pay for any WIC-eligible items at Dollar General or other grocery stores.

Since October 2020, electronic cards have been the standard method of payment.

Once all of your WIC-eligible items have been scanned, simply swipe your WIC card at the register and enter the four-digit PIN number to authenticate the transaction.

WIC products should be kept apart from all other products. Avoid paying for food that isn’t covered by WIC benefits if you can help it.

What other grocery stores do WIC members shop at?

While Dollar General stores are only a few of many big-name grocery chains that accept WIC benefits in the US, there are many others, such as:

  • Walmart
  • Walgreens
  • CVS
  • Kroger
  • Target
  • Publix

Customers who want to use their WIC benefits will be able to quickly identify WIC-eligible items because most of these stores clearly label them as such.

Bottom Line

Unfortunately, only a small number of Dollar General stores are currently WIC-eligible, and that number could change at any time.

Because of this, you should verify that your local Dollar General accepts WIC online or by calling ahead. Instead, you can use your WIC card at other grocery stores, such as Walmart, Target, Publix, or Save A Lot.
