Retailers jumped on the credit card bandwagon quickly when they realized how much money they could make by using them in everyday transactions.

Now, credit cards are accepted just about anywhere, and fewer people carry cash than ever before.

That might make you wonder: Does Aldi take credit cards? Perhaps you’ve heard that they don’t, or that you can only pay in cash. It’s time to take a deeper look at this question.

Does Aldi Take Credit Cards In 2022?

Aldi does take credit cards, including all four major companies: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. While Aldi did not always accept credit cards, they began to do so in 2016 and have continued to expand the forms of payment accepted since, to include tap-and-go and contactless payment.

Let’s delve even further into this subject, including a breakdown of the types of cards, whether or not Aldi charges a fee for using credit cards and even if you can get cash back. Read on for more!

What Kind Of Credit Cards Does Aldi Take?

Per Aldi’s website, “We accept several forms of payment including cash, most debit cards, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT), Link cards, SNAP and contactless pay such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.”

As you can see, the four major types of credit cards out there, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are all accepted at Aldi.

If you keep reading, you will see that many of the perks and extras associated with using those cards work in conjunction with shopping at Aldi, as well.

Does Aldi Charge A Fee To Use A Credit Card?

No, according to what I’ve found, Aldi does not charge a fee for customers to pay with a credit card.

Even though some retailers do this, Aldi’s business model (which is to pass on all savings!) would be at odds with this practice.

It’s always a good idea to call your credit card company if you see a fee on your statement.

Do Aldi’s ATMs accept tap-and-go credit cards?

Near-field communication (NFC) technology has been installed in Aldi’s point of sale terminals, allowing the terminals to accept both Apple and Google Pay via mobile devices as well as tap-and-go credit cards.

To pay, simply hold your credit card up to the NFC symbol (it looks like a series of parentheticals, all facing the same direction:)))) after the cashier gives you your total.

NFC-enabled cards will be automatically recognized by the reader. You’re good to go if it’s approved!

Are Apple or Google Pay Credit Cards Accepted at Aldi?

Forgetting your wallet at home is no longer a problem thanks to Apple and Google Pay.

You can use your mobile device to pay at the register if you have loaded your credit card information into your Apple or Google Wallet.

It works just like a credit card where you hold your phone near the NFC symbol and wait for it to be approved.

Is Aldi a place where you can get cash back on your credit card purchases?

Frequently, cardholders of Discover’s Cash Back credit card enquire as to whether or not specific merchants will refund their purchases in cash.

It’s true that Aldi takes part in Discover’s cash back program, but the same restrictions apply as with their debit card cash back: no more than $100 per transaction, and customers can only get $10, $20, $40, or $100. (no multiples of five).

Does Aldi Take The AMEX Blue Cash Preferred?

Aldi purchases are covered by the American Express Blue Cash Preferred program. Aldi is recognized as a supermarket by this program, which reimburses users six percent of their totals back based on their supermarket purchases (as it should).

Is Aldi Instacart Acceptable for Credit Card Payments?

Instacart allows you to use a credit card to shop at Aldi. Simply enter your credit card information into the app or website, and then select that card when you’re ready to pay for your order.

Aldi began accepting credit cards when?

Since Aldi only started accepting credit cards in March 2016, it may be hard to believe.

In the past, Aldi’s US stores only accepted cash or debit cards; they did not accept checks at any time.

Bloggers speculate that the chain’s decision to only accept certain forms of payment until 2016 may have something to do with the prevalence of cash transactions in Germany, where Aldi is based.

During the announcement of the new payment system, Aldi US CEO Jason Hart said, “We care about being able to make our customers’ shopping experiences simpler and better. We are excited about the new system!”

and allowing them to pay with their credit cards makes it easier for us to do that.”

It’s possible that the company realized that not accepting credit cards was costing them money and that they were alienating their most valuable customers: middle- and upper-class consumers.
