What is the purpose of the Department of Homeland Security?
On March 1, 2003, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was established as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. President Bush signed the Homeland Security Act into law in November 2002, resulting in the creation of a single national agency tasked with safeguarding the United States. Twenty-two federal agencies were combined into the Department of Homeland Security as a result. It is estimated that the CBP budget is $20.85 billion, and it employs over 62,400 people. At 328 points of entry into the United States, more than 21,000 CBP officers conduct thorough inspections of both cargo and passengers. 1,900 miles of the border between the United States and Mexico are guarded by more than 20,000 Border Patrol Agents. The largest K-9 unit in the United States is employed by the CBP.
Agents from the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) are not limited to the border states of Mexico and Canada. Including Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, they can be found in all 50 states. Although Nebraska has only one Port of Entry, it still has a need for customs officers. It was at this port in July 2011 that the Croatian government sought to capture a fugitive wanted for murder.

DHS also includes the United States Coast Guard, which has a budget of $11.340 billion and a workforce of 56,569, including 40,992 active duty personnel, 7,000 reservists and 8,577 full-time civilian employees. You don’t have to go to the Coast Guard Academy to apply for a job because there are so many civilian positions available. Jobs in electronics and mechanical engineering, maritime law, intelligence analysis, information technology (IT), paralegal, and marine inspection are just a few of the many possibilities.
Applicants to the Coast Guard Academy may do so without the need for Congressional approval. High school graduates who are between the ages of 17 and 22 and who are unmarried, American citizens, and debt-free are eligible for admission. Half the cadets are ranked in the top 10% of their high school class, and all are in the top 50%.
To say you work for the DHS is like saying you’re in the medical field to someone who doesn’t know you. In the latter case, you could be a medical office receptionist or a neurosurgeon. There are many career options in the Department of Homeland Security, just like there are in the medical field.
